Stride the Clyde: Robyn's Story

Robyn 4- family

“Throughout our stay, I always knew that I wanted to give something back and help support other families facing similar circumstances.”

Robyn's Hospital Journey

After her Mum’s 20-week scan baby Robyn was diagnosed with a rare condition, Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), where there is a hole in the diaphragm, allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest. CDH affects around 25 babies each year in Scotland.

Marc, Robyn’s Dad, shares:

“After an MRI later in the pregnancy, it became clear that Robyn’s condition was more severe than we first thought.

“The decision was made for her to be born in Glasgow, as it is home to Scotland’s only Neonatal ECMO Machine, should a baby need that level of support after birth. Fortunately, Robyn didn’t require ECMO.

“At just six days old, she underwent two operations, one surgery was to move her organs back into the correct position. Followed by a further surgery a few days later, to fully close the repair.

“Once she was stable, the medical team gradually reduced her medication to wake her up, slowly weaned her off breathing support, and increased her feeds until she was eventually ready to come home.”

Staying at Crossbasket House

During Robyn’s time in hospital, her family stayed at Crossbasket House for 43 days. Travelling from West Lothian each day would have meant long and unpredictable journeys - especially during the most critical moments.

Crossbasket House provided a place of respite for Robyn’s family, whilst ensuring they were able to remain close by.

“The kitchen facilities were probably the most valuable part for us. Although it was a shared space, it never felt crowded and still gave families a sense of having their own area. The dedicated fridge and freezer space was a huge help during our long stay.

“The donated food shelf was incredibly thoughtful. On days when we didn’t want to leave the hospital for long or spend time going to the shops, it was reassuring to know there was always something available if we needed it.

“Another fantastic feature was the children’s play area next to the kitchen space. Robyn’s older sister was two at the time, and it kept her entertained when she was visiting.

“It was definitely one of her highlights during our time staying there and it helped make things feel more normal for our family during such a difficult time.”

“Our friends and family know just how important Crossbasket House was to us during such a difficult time, and it’s been amazing to see so many people getting behind our fundraising efforts and support the charity.”
