Sandy's Story

Sandy at home

Sandy was born unable to swallow and needed life-saving surgery just days after birth. Thanks to your generous donations, his parents, Laura and Scott, were able to stay close to him at Crossbasket House during the most difficult time of their lives.

"Sandy was born on 19th September 2024. Just one day later, he was unable to take any feeds, and when doctors at Wishaw General tried to pass a feeding tube, they couldn’t get it through."

"With no clear answers, we were rushed by blue light ambulance to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow."

"It was the scariest moment of our lives."

"At the hospital, we met a team of amazing people, including Dr Gregor Walker, our absolute angel. It was there we learned that Sandy had TOFS (Tracheoesophageal Fistula) and Oesophageal Atresia, meaning he was born unable to swallow and would need urgent surgery. Our hearts broke."

"On 21st September, Sandy underwent surgery. After a long and anxious 8-hour wait, he arrived safely in NICU."

"We can't praise the doctors and nurses enough — they were amazing! They made us feel our boy was safe and supported us through absolutely everything. We still attend the hospital for regular check-ups, and we’re so grateful for the care Sandy continues to receive."

"During Sandy's hospital stay, we were lucky to stay at Crossbasket House. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed. It gave us a safe, peaceful place to rest, cook meals, do some washing, and connect with other families going through similar experiences. It was such a comfort during a really difficult time."

"Sandy is now doing really well and we're so happy to have him home!"

Family Fun Day

"We recently returned to Crossbasket House for the Family Fun Day, and this time, with Sandy in our arms."

"It was so special to be back, to catch up with friends, and to make new memories. We even won the giant teddy that now sits proudly in Sandy’s bedroom!"
